Hello everyone and seeing as the Olympic games are almost done, I thought I would find out some facts on the Olympic games.
Let’s start off with some background information. The Olympic games are a international event that happen every two years. The games are alternated between Winter and Summer Olympics. They first started in Athens, Greece. When they first started the Olympic games were not international and only men were allowed to watch or compete. This is were they were held:
Obviously this is not how it is since it was built. It was reconstructed for the first modern Olympics in 1896.
Now that we have some background information let’s start learning some fact’s.
The five Olympic rings represent the 5 major regions in the world Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe and Oceania. The rings colours go as follow: blue, yellow, black, green, and red
Every single flag in the world has at least one of these colours.
The only three countries that have never held the Olympic games are Africa, South America and Antarctica.
Only one person has ever won a gold medal at both the summer and winter games. That one person is Eddie Eagen.
He won light-heavyweight boxing at the 1920 Antwerp summer games. Many years later Eddie was a part of Americas four-man bobsled team at the 1932 Lake Placid Winter Olympic games.
Norway is a straight up BOSS at the winter Olympics.
In total Norway has won 303 Olympic medals, 107 of these are gold. Both of these are all-time records. Not only this but Norway has greater bang for buck. By this I mean Norway has won 1 medal for every 16,556 residents. On the other hand, America has one medal for every 1,237,154 residents.
Another cool thing is that the person who has won the most medals in his career has won 12 medals, 8 of these are gold. Guess where he lives. If you guessed Norway then you would be right.
18 countries have only sent 1 athlete to Sochi. These countries are:
Zimbabwe*, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Timor-Leste*, Malta*, Cayman Islands, Mexico, Venezuela, U.S. Virgin Islands, Nepal, Luxembourg, Bermuda, Paraguay*, British Virgin Islands, Hong Kong, Philippines and Tonga*.
* Making their Winter Olympics debut this year.
Those were 5 cool facts about the Olympic games. I hope you enjoy the rest of the games.
