my personal goals

If there’s one thing I’ve learned it’s that goals are important to have and to work towards. Without them, we can often lose our sense of direction and feel like we are working all the time for no good reason. I have found that I work much better when I have a direction that I am moving towards and therefore having a few goals which cover each part of my life that I would like to improve is very important to me.

Also regarding this, it is important to have a plan regarding how you’re going to achieve your goals. I’m not going to cover my planning process in how I am going to achieve these goals here today, mostly because it would likely bore anyone else as well as probably get too personal. The reason I am making this post is that by making my goals public I hope that it makes me accountable to the goals and gives me some amount of motivation to not give up in 1, 3, 6 or 12 months even.

So here we go:

University: My goal to achieve with my studies is to get at least an 85% average across all of my subjects in 2020. I am going into my second year of my Bachelor of Sports and Exercise Science at Latrobe University and I would like to increase my average score just to improve within myself as well as to increase my options for further study once I finish my course. I know that this is not unachievable as last year I achieved a bit lower than this figure for my sports science specific subjects and I know that there were a couple of key aspects of how I was learning and studying that I can improve on. I am also going to be putting in an effort to apply the skills and knowledge I learn at uni as much as possible both in my own coaching and internship opportunities as well as on this website sharing what I learn.

Learning: A week without learning to me is a week wasted to me considering my goals and aspirations. Therefore I am going to focus on actually being proactive in my learning even more so than just working at University. I am going to achieve this by reading books and creating posts on this blog which require research on a variety of topics that I am interested in. The book I am currently reading is “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People”. I am finding it very interesting and would like to continue reading once I finish this book.

Fitness: This is important to me particularly as in order to be a strength and conditioning coach or to work in elite sport you need to be reputable and thus have your own fitness base. In the last year, I have already improved my fitness and strength dramatically losing a significant amount of weight and making going to the gym a regular habit of mine. During the first part of this year, my goal in the gym is to be able to do 30 pushups with good technique, be able to do 5 chin-ups in a row and I want to be able to squat 100kg. I would like to do this while continuing to work on my technique on all of the core lifts and other common exercises. I would also like to be able to score a 15 on the yo-yo test for my reffing.

Branding and Social: I am putting a greater focus on how I portray myself and show who I am to the world. This basically comes down to keeping this website updated and actually using my socials in ways that show my interests in Sports Science as well as who I am.

Basketball Refereeing: This year I would like to achieve my A grade and work towards starting Junior Panel. I will have to achieve this by working with individuals at my association to work on my weaknesses as a referee as well as to improve my ability overall. I know I still have a lot of improvement to go with this goal however I am going to make sure I stay focused on improving in this area to give it my best shot.

That was just a basic overview of what I am currently working towards. I have put off this post as it feels unusual to make these goals public however I believe it should help me in achieving them. I hope to look back at these by the end of the year or even years from now and to see that I have achieved these goals and much more.

If you made it this far, thanks for reading and let me know what your goals are in the comments below to increase your accountability as well!
